Afyon Kocatepe University Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Afyon Kocatepe University is among the first to be established in state universities in our country. Preparatory and infrastructure works for the department’s establishment began in 2009, and our first students began their education in 2012. Our department has 10 full-time academic staff members, including 1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors, 3 Research Assistants, and 1 Lecturer. In addition, 10 different faculty members from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Computer Engineering, and the Faculty of Sports Sciences contribute to our educational process by participating in undergraduate courses.

As of August 2022, our department continues its education with 378 students. Approximately 57% of our students are female and 43% are male. Furthermore, 16% of our students are international. Between 2016 and 2022, 21 of our students went abroad within the scope of Erasmus+. Our students are the most active participants in Erasmus student mobility programs within our faculty. Currently, we have students continuing their education abroad under Erasmus, with 4 students benefiting from the program in the 2021-2022 academic year.

We aim to educate our students with the qualifications required by Biomedical Engineering. In this context, we train biomedical engineers who are capable of conducting design, production, operation, maintenance/repair, and calibration activities for medical devices, systems, and materials; who can generate solutions to medical problems; who possess analytical thinking skills; who can adapt to interdisciplinary studies; and who have professional ethical awareness and responsibility. To this end, our courses have been carefully planned, incorporating feedback from numerous internal and external stakeholders.

Students who choose our department receive a strong foundation in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry in their first years. In the following years, they take a wide range of courses providing in-depth knowledge in engineering sciences, such as electrical-electronics education, the use, maintenance, repair, and calibration of biomedical devices, and their electronic/mechanical hardware and software. Fundamental medical and biological knowledge is provided through courses such as “Human Anatomy” in the third semester and “Human Physiology” and “Medical Biology” in the fourth semester. Alongside core Biomedical Engineering courses, our students can also take elective courses from other faculties, such as “Photography,” “Effective Communication,” and “First Aid.”

Our department has four main sub-disciplines: Bioelectronics, Bioinformatics, Biomaterials, and Biomechanics. Students can specialize in their desired field through the elective courses offered by these departments. They can focus on areas related to software, electronics, mechanics, or materials science in Biomedical Engineering, with guidance from our faculty members on career direction and course selection.

For instance, a student who predominantly chooses courses from the Biomechanics department will graduate with expertise in implant design, medical device manufacturing methods, computer-aided design (CAD)/analysis software, and 3D printers. Similarly, a student who focuses on Bioinformatics will gain competence in artificial intelligence applications, medical image processing, computer programming, and medical information systems.
