What is Biomedical Engineering?

In its simplest definition, Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to biology and medicine. Biomedical Engineers aim to close the gap between engineering and medicine by combining engineering design and problem-solving skills with medical-biological sciences. Their goal is to achieve overall advancements in healthcare, including diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment [1]. Biomedical engineers work in the design, production, development, operation, and maintenance of medical tests, devices, and systems used for diagnosis and therapy.

Biomedical Engineering is a multidisciplinary (multi-branch) engineering field. It is essential to emphasize the concept of “Engineering” here. In our country, students who have not sufficiently researched or recognized Biomedical Engineering may perceive this department as a profession similar to physiotherapy, medical sales representation, or nursing. However, Biomedical Engineering is an engineering branch that is highly similar to and directly related to mechanical, software, electrical/electronics, and materials engineering. Engineering is the practice of using natural sciences, mathematics, and the scientific method to solve problems, increase efficiency and productivity, and improve systems. Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to solve problems [2]. While scientists and inventors introduce innovations, it is the engineers who apply these discoveries to the real world.

Unlike other engineers, Biomedical Engineers specifically strive to solve engineering problems encountered in the medical field. They take part in the design, production, and operation of all kinds of machinery, devices, and electronic instruments needed in medicine. During the design and production process, biomedical engineers receive support from professionals in other engineering disciplines such as mechanics, materials, and software, as well as professionals from basic sciences like chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Furthermore, during the operational phase of the products they design and manufacture, they work closely with medical personnel, such as nurses and technicians. Biomedical Engineers deal with a wide range of equipment included in the definition of Medical Devices.
